The short answer
- If your agency created the account, Google makes the agency's manager account the owner automatically. If you created it and linked the agency afterward, the agency does not own it by default.
- To remove a manager you need an Admin user of your own on the account. Only Admin can add or remove users and unlink managers.
- Who pays is a separate setting. If you unlink the paying manager, Google says the account stops serving ads immediately.
- You can see all of this in your own account in about two minutes, without asking the agency anything.
The 2-minute check
Sign in with your own Google identity, not the agency's, and open the account. Then look at four places.
| What to check | Where | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Your own access level | Admin menu, Access and security, Users tab | Admin is the level that can add or remove users, accept or reject manager link requests and unlink managers. Any lower level, or no entry for you, means you cannot do those things today. |
| How many Admins there are | The same Users tab | Google warns that with a single admin you may lose access to your tags if that user becomes unavailable. Two Admins on your side is the safer picture. |
| Which managers are linked | Admin menu, Access and security, Managers tab | The manager accounts linked to yours. The tab has an Owner column, which shows whether a manager has administrative ownership. |
| Who pays | Billing, Settings | Shows the paying manager, if there is one. Unlinking that manager stops ads immediately, so billing has to move first. |

Two ways an agency gets in
| How it started | Who owns it | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| You created the account and the agency's manager account asked to link | The client account owns its data. The manager has no administrative ownership unless you turn it on. | A client Admin accepts or rejects the link request and can unlink the manager at any time. |
| The agency created the account from its manager account | The manager automatically becomes the owner. | A client cannot transfer ownership but can always unlink a manager that has it. Google says the new account starts with no users, and unlinking requires first inviting at least one user with administrative access. |

If you are locked out
- If someone with Admin on your side is still there, they hand the account over by inviting the new person as Admin and then removing their own access.
- If no one has Admin, for example because the original account manager has left your organization, Google's Account Access Request form asks you to provide proof of account ownership.
- Google says its support team validates that proof before it grants access to the account.

What you lose when you unlink
- The account keeps its own campaign history. Google says it will not lose it when a manager is unlinked.
- Remarketing lists the manager shared into your account stop being populated, and the manager's cross-account conversion tag stops recording for later clicks.
- Cross-account conversion actions can only be changed by manager accounts. Data already recorded for account-specific conversion actions stays in Google Ads.
- Ask which of your conversion actions are account-specific and which are cross-account before anything is unlinked.

The other accounts, in one line each
- Google Business Profile: one primary owner, and more owners and managers. Only the primary owner can transfer primary ownership. See who is on it under People and access. Manage your Business Profile owners & managers, Transfer primary ownership of a Business Profile.
- Search Console: a property needs at least one verified owner, or no one has access. A removed owner can come back while their verification token remains. Check Unused ownership tokens. Managing owners, users, and permissions.
- GA4: the Administrator role can manage users and the Editor role cannot. See who has it under Account access management or Property access management. Access and data-restriction management.
How we work
- You own Google Ads, Meta Business Manager, GA4, Search Console, Google Business Profile, your domain, your site code. We work inside them, and if we stop working together you keep all of them.
- Run this same check on us. Ask any agency, including us, to walk you through the Users and Managers tabs before you sign.
- We do not promise rankings, leads or return on ad spend.
See the Google Ads service page, the how we work page and six questions to ask any agency.
What Google does not say
- We found no Google page that says a business should own its own account. This guide describes the mechanics, not a rule.
- We found no Google statement on who owns the payments profile when an agency creates the account, or on whether the access request form works when an agency is the owner manager.
- Google's help pages show no last-updated dates, so every statement here is as of October 2, 2026.

Questions people ask
Does my agency own my Google Ads account if it created it?
Per Google's help page, when a manager account creates a client account, the manager automatically becomes the owner of that account. If you created the account and linked the manager afterward, the manager does not have administrative ownership by default.
Can I remove my agency from my Google Ads account?
If you have Admin access on the account, yes. Google says a client can unlink a manager at any time. If the paying manager is the one you unlink, Google says the account stops serving ads immediately, so sort out billing first.
What is the difference between access and ownership?
Access levels belong to users: Email-only, Billing, Read-only, Standard and Admin. Ownership belongs to a manager account that is linked to yours. A manager can have access without owning the account.
Will I lose my campaign history if I leave my agency?
Google says the account keeps its own campaign history after you unlink a manager. What stops working are things the manager provided across accounts, such as shared remarketing lists and a cross-account conversion tag.
Does Montrelia own my ad accounts?
No. You own Google Ads, Meta Business Manager, GA4, Search Console, Google Business Profile, your domain and your site code. We work inside them, and if we stop working together you keep all of them.
